Lunch today was at HealthFare Restaurant, on the SE corner of Jasper Avenue and 103rd Street (officially 10279 Jasper Ave). I went with my sister, whom I am lucky enough to work with, and we were joined by two co-workers who had the same idea. I think we caught them off-guard. One of those awkward situations where they probably wanted to be alone, but felt obligated to join us. More the merrier I say! š
HealthFare is about fresh and clean, and this is reflected in their decor. The place is surrounded by windows and is bright, cheerful, clean and spacious. The menu is posted on LCD monitors, the staff friendly, and the food choices are all about clean eating. I selected the butternut squash soup and side beet salad, which was filling and delicious. My sister had the charred chicken salad, and claimed it to be delicious, but, she was nervous about some of the vegetables (she wasn’t able to recognize them) and she wanted salt. There was nary a salt shaker to be found. She had to get up and ask at the counter. After some effort, the single salt shaker was found in the back corner of the restaurant.
I am pleased with HealthFare. I was impressed with their menu, and their commitment to healthful, vegan meal choices. I’ve heard their service can be a bit slow, but we had to wait only a few minutes. Most impressive is they don’t have a soda fountain or commitment to Pepsi or Coke type of company, and sell absolutely no sugary fizzy pop. Beverages choices range from my fav San Pellagrino water to my not so favourite V8, to bottled fruit juice with chunky bits which caused much mirth at our table.
So as Crack Chicken keeps losing its allure, and fresh wholesome eating becomes the craving, I can see that HeathFare has the potential to become a favourite lunch destination.
PS: Before you start congratulating me on my new healthy lifestyle, let me add that Michael and I are meeting very good friends tonight at Red Lobster. š
Sigh….I do struggle without the diet pop, I confess I do. Health food? Bring it on. Vegan? Serve it up. No salt? Who needs it anyways? But a diet cola absence is a deal breaker. Unless you were buying of course. Then, well, I’ll have water with that please š
Jenny my NL friend, I would buy you your very own tank of diet cola if it would mean you’d come out for lunch with me, here, in Edmonton. The only caveat is we would need to golf a full 18 holes afterwards, with cart, and drink beer followed by wings and fries in the clubhouse.
And let’s not forget the free wireless there! A delicious place to eat and they brag about catering using an eco-friendly car.
…..and now they are closed. Glad I didn’t have time to form an attachment.
The HealthFare closed in Edmonton as it was a corporate store and the lease was up so the franchisor decided to go the franchising route. As this was his starting point to get the concept started and needed to start somewhere i guess. Now the brand has two awesome HealthFare locations in Calgary. I also heard that the franchise has sold the rights to BC so i guess the BC people will be seeing them soon too!
Thanks for the update Khadija. It’s appreciated. It would be nice if they came back to Edmonton.
The southside manager ran the place down the drain.
Are there any healthfare restaurants left in Edmonton or Calgary? Is the whole thing shut down completely?
There are 2 great locations in Calgary and the first store opens in BC next month! Things are really starting to pick up again!
